Enable Color Picker Once You’ve Installed PowerToys


The very first step before using PowerToys is to install the same. Therefore, the steps to download and install PowerToys are:


Visit the Microsoft website.

Go to the download page for PowerToys. Download an EXE file and run the same.

Once the installation procedure completes, locate the PowerToys settings on your desktop and open the same. Alternatively, you can search for the same in the Start menu.

Click on the ‘ColorPicker’ option from the sidebar.

Turn the slider on for the ‘Enable Color Picker’ option.

Notably, the keyboard shortcut ‘Windows + Shift + C’ is used to activate the color picker. However, you can change the same according to your preference.


Now, you can exit the PowerToys settings as it’s not necessary to run the same for using Color Picker. 


Activating Color Picker Using a Keyboard Shortcut


Once you’ve enabled the Color Picker from the settings, you can use the same anytime by activating it. Use the keyboard shortcut ‘Windows + Shift + C’ or whatever you have set. After using the shortcut, a pop-up box will appear beside the cursor viewing the color you’re pointing.


Use the mouse cursor to point at any color on your desktop, including applications, icons, images, taskbar, and more. To view further information, hover on the color and left-click your mouse button. A new window will open displaying the hex color code, the HSL value of the selected color, and the RGB value. For copying any of those values, hover over the same and click on the ‘Copy’ icon.


Additionally, you can select the color value of the selected color within the Color Picker window. All you need to do is click on the middle of the color bar. A new screen with sliders will open that’ll let you adjust the value using the mouse or entering it from the keyboard.


Once the values are set, click on the ‘Ok’ button to save the color in your palette. In case you want to take down the color from the palette, right-click on the color square. Click on the  ‘Remove’ option.


Furthermore, use the ‘Eyedropper’ icon in the top-left corner of the window to pick more colors. 


To close the Color Picker window instantly, press the ‘Escape’ key. Alternatively, you can open the detail screen and click on the ‘X’ button in the top-right corner.
