Netflix Gets the Distribution Rights of Venice Fest Winner “Pieces of a Woman”
Netflix has bought the rights for the global distribution of critically adulated Venice winner “Pieces of a Woman.” The subscribers of Netflix who had heard about the film have stormed the social media rapturously expressing their desire to witness a widely talked about performance by Vanessa Kirby and Shia LaBeouf.
The tragic drama “Pieces of a Woman” was the first English film from Hungarian filmmaker Kornel Mundruczo based on a script penned by Kata Weber. The story explored the lives of a distressed couple, their desolation and struggle, after the failure of home birth. Many critics lauded the performance of Mission Impossible actress Vanessa Kirby in the film; the actress who is also receiving rave reviews for another Venice hit, Oscar-worthy love story “The World to Come.”
Critics from Variety and IndieWire hailed Kirby’s performance in “Pieces of a Woman” as the performance of her career.
In a statement, director Mundruczo enthused about the deal with Netflix and praised their taste in independent films in the recent past, comparing it to the United Artists of the 1970s. He didn’t shy away from calling the streaming giant as the “champion of filmmakers and original voices of today.”
Kirby is now officially the recipient of the Best Actress Volpi Cup for her role in “Pieces of a Woman,” which she received on Saturday at the awards ceremony for this year’s Venice Festival.
The deal has been credited to BRON Studios and CAA Media Finance, who negotiated the agreement on behalf of the filmmakers.
The film has an extraordinarily talented ensemble, which is led by Vanessa Kirby alongside Shia LaBeouf. The duo is supported by Molly Parker, Sarah Snook, Iliza Shlesinger, Benny Safdie, Jimmie Fails, and Ellen Burstyn.
In her articulated victory speech, Kirby expressed her gratitude to her producers for giving her the chance to star in a lead role for the first time in her career. She also said that she is optimistic that the film will bring a social change by encouraging conversations surrounding tragedies faced by families who lose their children.
Legendary Filmmaker Martin Scorsese who worked as an executive producer in the production team of “Pieces of a Woman,” also praised the work done by the director, writers, and cast. He said that from the first scene itself, he was deeply engrossed with the subject, and when he finally sat down to watch the film, he was fascinated by the fact that how compassionately and sensitively they have handled a family tragedy. He added that he felt as if he had been dropped in the vortex of a “family crisis.”
He specifically pointed out the performance by his old friend Ellen Burstyn who played the supporting character Elizabeth in the film.
In the harrowing drama, Vanessa Kirby played the role of a young mother who lays out a plan for natural birth that goes tragically off track. She and her husband, Shia LaBeouf, then grieve with her mother and midwife by their side.
Korner Mundruczo is also known for directing “White God,” which is a recipient of a Prix Un Certain Regard Award from the Cannes film festival in the year 2014. Kevin Turner and Ashley Levinson produced the film under the banner of Little Lamb Productions. Aaron Ryder is also part of the production team. The list of other executive producers includes Sam Levinson, Stuart Manashil, Viktoria Petranyi, Jason Cloth, Richard McConnell, and Suraj Maraboyina, who represented Creative Wealth Media, Aaron Gilbert, who represented BRON Studios, and Steven Thibault.
